DJ Edson Sabajo and MC Guillaume "Gee" Schmidt opened Patta in Amsterdam in 2004 to sell sneakers the city couldn't otherwise get, naming it after the Surinamese slang word for shoe in a nod to their heritage. Nike collaborations followed, from the 2006 Air Max 90 "Homegrown" to the Air Max 1 range for the shop's fifth birthday in 2009, and Patta grew into a Black-owned label with full collections, a running team since 2010, its own soundsystem and a foundation that funds youth projects in sport, music and culture.
